The city of Pune, located at the confluence of the Mutha and Mula rivers, is today among the fastest-growing hubs of the country. This IT centre of Deccan is one of the largest cities in southern India and is a well-known educational and cultural hub globally.

The city is seamlessly connected to nearby industrial centres and the cities of Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolhapur, Ahmedabad, Nashik, and witnesses’ heavy traffic inflow and outflow every day. A mega project that decongests this urban city was the need of the hour. And the Pune Ring Road is proposed to solve this problem and aid the growth of surrounding centres in the long run. Let’s together understand what this project is and its impact.

What is the Pune Ring Road?

On completion, the 170-km-long Pune Ring Road project will separate inner-city traffic from highway traffic and significantly enhance transit for Punekars. It will decongest the city’s vehicular traffic and reduce pollution caused by traffic jams. It has two phases, East and West, and will be an eight-lane express highway that caters to vehicle speeds of 120 km per hour.

The state government has set a budget of ₹1,500 crore for this ambitious project. Land acquisition will be carried out in about 83 villages in six talukas of the Pune district for infrastructural development.

How does the Pune Ring Road help?

When we talk about Pune city today, it encompasses the areas of PCMC, towns of Alandi and Dehu, industrial centres of Chakan and Pirangut and the thriving hubs of Baner, Bavdhan and Wakad. In fact, several national and state highways also traverse through the Pune Metropolitan Area. This leads to major traffic congestion in the city centre every day, thus increasing pollution and impacting the quality of life.

The number of vehicles has been on a steady rise in the city. According to the RTO, in March 2019, the total number of vehicles in Pune reached 38.88 lakh. This number has only increased after the pandemic. Existing roads in the city cannot be widened due to its dense urban agglomeration and real-estate infrastructure.

The interstate and ‘within the state’ traffic flow via Pune is also extremely high as three major national highways, including Mumbai-Bangalore, Mumbai-Hyderabad-Vijayawada, all pass through the city. State highways, including Pune-Nashik, Pune-Pandharpur, Pune-Aurangabad, and Pune-Mangaon, pass through Pune, thus adding to the heavy volume of traffic in the metropolitan region.

How will this project benefit space owners?

As mentioned above, land acquisition will be carried out in about 83 villages in the Pune district. Farmers and land owners will get quadruple compensation for their land, keeping current and future trends in mind. Once complete, the ring road will pass through a number of villages, and the prices of land are touted to increase in the coming future. At the same time, there will be planned development in the surrounding area.

The circular stretch of Pune Ring Road will not just improve the commuting conditions in the traffic corridors of the city but also lay the groundwork for new residential hubs in the outlying areas of the metropolis. PMRDA is looking at creating new residential and commercial nodes along Ring Road.

Citizens benefit the most from transit-oriented development projects like the Ring Road. This model helps them reach their places of work with a minimum commute and get back home easily. Lesser hours in traffic and pollution also have a positive impact on the quality of life of people. People residing in West Pune will benefit the most once the Pune Ring Road project is complete.
